Photo/Audio recap of the day's protests
Private citizens and public officials continued a series of protests on Feb. 5 regarding Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) work within the U.S. Treasury and its shutdown and gutting of the USAID agency earlier in the week.
Protestors began the day adjacent to the U.S. Capitol building and were joined by Congressional leaders such as Sen. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) and Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) as well as workers from within USAID to speak out on the ongoing cuts made within the agency.
Later, protestors as part of the 50/50/1 movement which spurred action in all 50 states and DC staged near the Peace Monument in the shadow of the Capitol Building before joining protestors at the Department of Labor. The protest allegedly forced Musk and others to adjust their planned in-person meeting to a virtual call, to which, once notified, the crowd erupted in cheers. That protest brought out other leaders, including Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.), Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-Texas), Rep. Melanie Stansbury (D-N.M.), Rep. Robert Garcia (D-Calif.) and Rep. Glenn Ivey (D-Md.).
